Andeana Treks - Travel to Peru
Join us on another epic trek in Peru this year! We'll be taking on an unmatched journey through the Sacred Valley covering all of the most important sites and unique, one-of-a-kind experiences with locals. Then, break off into one of two incredible treks: the iconic Machu Picchu for Peru's first-time visitors, or the unexplored trek to Choquequirao for experienced trekkers. 2024 dates will be announced soon, please see our past November 2023 itinerary below.
November 11 - 16, 2023: Cusco & The Sacred Valley
Day 1 - Saturday, November 11th: Arrive to Cusco
Arrival at your leisure into Cusco. Transfer will be provided for the airport to the hotel. Check into your hotel to rest and relax after your long flight and feel free to walk around the city, or just sit and have some coca tea to help your body acclimate to the altitude. It's important to take a day to adjust to the altitude before we embark on our busy and epic adventure!
Day 2 - Sunday, November 12th: Misminay, Tiobamba, Maras & Moray
Enjoy breakfast at the hotel and then our official Sacred Valley Tour begins at 9am! This will be an exciting adventure and introduction to the colorful, spiritual Quechua culture. We will journey by van across the Sacred Valley stopping first at the Misminay Community just on the outskirts of Cusco. Here we will experience a day in the life of a Quechua local and get to participate in many of their traditions like a unique Pachamama ceremony to honor Mother Earth, learning a bit of the Quechua language, and experience some of their agricultural methods of plowing or harvesting the soil.
From there, we’ll have a relaxing, authentic picnic lunch at Tiobamba with amazing views of the Sacred Valley and cathedral. After lunch we will continue our journey across the Sacred Valley to explore the beautiful Maras and salt flats and Moray agricultural ruins from colonial times. Finally after a full first day, we will check into the hotel for dinner and relaxation!
Day 3 - Monday, November 13th: Ollantaytambo Ruins
After breakfast at the hotel, we will be spending the day in Andeana Hats’ Peru headquarters, the Incan citadel of Ollantaytambo. We will walk around this adorable old fortress town, shop, climb the Ollantaytambo fortress ruins, and walk to the nearby organic farm, El Albergue for a very traditional Pachamanca lunch (earth-oven), coffee, and distillery tour. The tradition of Pachamanca is where they prepare your meal by digging a hole in the ground, burying your meat and vegetables with heated up lava stones, and then covering it back again to cook in the Earth. This is an ancient tradition dating back to the Inca times.
We will then visit the Valle Sagrado Brewery and later dine at Chuncho restaurant, the sister farm-to-table restaurant to El Albergue that uses the ingredients from their own organic farm that we toured at lunch to create their incredible dishes. After yet another amazing meal, we will head back to the hotel for rest and relaxation.
Day 4 - Tuesday, November 14th: Patacancha Valley
After breakfast in the hotel, we will set off in the morning to drive to the rural town of Patacancha, to visit one of the weaving communities. You will meet our non-profit partner, Awamaki, learn about what they do, and experience a full weaving demonstration from the female artisans there. We will have a delicious lunch at Patacancha hosted by the expert weavers themselves and then visit their local impact and community center. Here we can learn how we can help and donate to these communities.
After our tour, we can have some down time at the hotel before we get ready for our special dinner. Afterwards, we travel to dinner at the luxurious Tambo del Inka Resort and get settled into our next fabulous hotel for the night.
Day 5 - Wednesday, November 15th: Pisaq Ruins & Cusco
After breakfast at the hotel, we will be continuing our journey across the Sacred Valley to another impressive, ancient Inca citadel of Pisaq where we will hike around and explore some of the most beautiful architectural sites of indigenous Inca.
Afterwards, we will walk around the modern town of Pisaq and have time to explore and shop the lovely artisan markets in town. From there, we will drive back to the impressive colonial city of Cusco, which used to be the Capital of the Inca Empire. Get ready to have your mind blown in this gorgeous city and our Asian-Peruvian fusion dinner at Kion. After dinner we will relax in our new hotel.
Day 6 - Thursday, November 16th: Saqsayhuaman & Cusco
After breakfast in the Hotel, we will be spending the day in Cusco, taking a walking day tour of the city and exploring the nearby Incan ruins of the Temple of the Sun and the archeological site of Saqsayhuaman.
Then we will have lunch at Pachapapa, and have a free afternoon to walk around and shop! Trust me you will want to get lost in the narrow cobblestone streets and discover all of the hidden cafes and shops.
Our final evening as one group we will go to the top of San Blas for the best cocktails and views of the city at Limbus Restobar. After dinner and drinks you will want to get your rest, because the next day we split up into two groups; one group will be taking the glass train to explore the ruins of Machu Picchu, one of the 7 Natural wonders of the World and the other group will be trekking 4 days to Choquequirao (the “new” Machu Picchu unknown by most tourists). This is literally a “choose your own adventure” of how hard you want to workout to see ruins. Both experiences will leave you literally breathless and exploring some of the most beautiful Incan Ruins deep in the jungles of Peru.
Choose Your Own Adventure
Option 1: Machu Picchu November 17 - 19, 2023
Day 7 - Friday, November 17th (The Machu Picchu Route):
The Machu Picchu Route will take you Friday morning via a glass ceiling train from Cusco to Aguas Calientes. Spend the afternoon walking around this tiny town, check in, and eat an early dinner at your hotel before going to bed early so you can be well-rested to explore the iconic Machu Picchu Ruins.
Day 8 - Saturday, November 18th (The Machu Picchu Route):
Get ready to check off a big Bucket List destination with Machu Picchu! The first bus leaves at 5:30am, at the bus stop that is walking distance from your hotel to reach Machu Picchu for a magical sunrise over the ruins. There will be a guided tour and plenty of free time to hike around and check out other areas of Machu Picchu, like the Sun Gate, before catching your afternoon train back to Cusco. Depending on your flight you can either decide to power through and take a red eye flight back home that night or opt to stay overnight in Cusco to have one more day to explore this incredible city. You will never want to leave Cusco!
Day 9 - Sunday, November 19th (The Machu Picchu Route):
Travel Day back to Lima to catch your international flight. Times TBD.
Option 2: Choquequirao Trek November 17 - 21, 2023
Day 7 - Friday, November 17th (The Choquequirao Route):
Voted one of the top 5 treks in the world by National Geographic in 2022, The Choquequirao Trek will take you hiking vigorously for four days, camping out along an incredible Incan trail through the mountains and the beautiful sights of the Apurimac River Canyon! At each camp, your porters will prepare your meals, set up your camp, and there will be some time to explore the wonderful wildlife and sights. This is not an easy trek, but you will be rewarded with some of the most dramatic, breathtaking views of the Andes Mountains.
We leave Cusco early in the morning in our private transport and drive towards Cachora, an Andean community located 4-5 hours from Cusco at 2800m/9184ft, the starting point of the trek where we meet our horsemen and horses. We start our hike climbing for two and a half hours towards the Abra Capuliyoc at 2750m/9020ft, where we'll enjoy beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and the Apurimac River Canyon. We then continue descending for two more hours towards Chiquisca, where we set our camp and spend the night.
Day 8 - Saturday, November 18th (The Choquequirao Route):
We leave Chiquisca as early as 6.00am to go down to Rosalina Beach, which will take about one hour. We then cross the Apurimac River and start climbing towards Santa Rosa, zigzagging up a steep slope. This climb will take an approximated 2h, and it is important that we leave early. In Santa Rosa, we make a half an hour break, to sample Cambray, a local sugar cane extract. Afterwards, we continue our hike slowly climbing for two and a half
hours until we reach our lunch spot in Marampata. From here we walk another two hours until we reach the archaeological complex of Choquequirao, located at 3103m/10178ft, where we will set up camp and enjoy some free time to explore the terraces and buildings. When the sun starts to set, you might want to sit and observe the canyon, where condors are spotted.
Day 9 - Sunday, November 19th (The Choquequirao Route):
This morning we enjoy a complete guided tour of the Choquequirao complex: we will visit the high parts (Hanan), and the lower parts (Urin), and some areas that are still covered in wild foliage and ready to be restored into the way it was when the Incas owned it. After the tour, we start our walk back towards Santa Rosa, where we have lunch. We then continue descending for another 2 hours until we reach Rosalina Beach at 1450m/4756ft, where we have time to take a refreshing dip in the waters of the Apurimac River. We camp and dine here.
Day 10 - Monday, November 20th (The Choquequirao Route):
We leave camp after breakfast to start the two to three hour climb to Chiquisca, to then make our way back to the Abra Capuliyoc, close to which we have our lunch. In the afternoon, we continue on our two-hour return route to Cachora, where a private transport will be waiting to take us back to Cusco. Estimated arrival time around 9.00pm. You may choose to stay in Cusco, or take a late-night flight back to Lima.
